Lifting my eyes from the book, from the tightly sequenced lines
to the full and perfect night:
Oh how like the stars my buried feelings break free . . .
— Rilke, Uncollected Poems

Infancy matters....

The thread running through my education and experience is the realization that how we were born, and how we were babies and young children -- what happened and what we made of it -- matters a great deal for ourselves, our parents, siblings and other family members. Not just in the distant past, but in the day to day of our contemporary lives, alive though often unseen. As an analyst, supervisor or consultant my effort is to try to help others discover and face the truths of emotional life and relationship while addressing the forces, often unconscious, that impede its wholesome expression.

This is most readily accomplished in the heat of the moment in the psychoanalytic session, making use of the thermals of emotion that swirl between analyst and analysand.
